Like fighters at a weigh-in, the two men were granted a  look at each other before their struggle.

It was the spring of 1978. The Columbian, Carlos Enrique Lehder Rivas, made his entrance like a title holder, followed by an entourage. He strode to the reception desk at the Treasure Cay Hotel on Abaco Island in the Bahamas, pulled out a thick roll of American currency, and booked an entire floor. The American, Richard Novak, who had arrived as a hitchhiker on an acquaintance's chartered fishing boat a little while before, watched from a chair in the lobby. He was alone.

Lehder glanced up and saw Novak watching him. Perhaps he thought Novak himself was a charter boat captain smelling the possibility of a new business. It would not have been a wild mental leap–Novak had the look of one who has spent years at sea in the tropics, as indeed he had. For whatever reason, Lehder smiled at Novak. He had a big, loose smile.

"Hello," Novak said.

Lehder then stopped smiling, put his money away, and walked off down the hall, trailed by his companions.

Novak left Treasure Clay soon after, but he remembered that smile . . .
